According to Eurostat data for 2025, Italy has received the most asylum applications so far this year. Once security was increased along the new routes – the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, and Crete –, the number of people using the more traditional routes, such as the central Mediterranean from Libya to Italy, increased significantly.
