The French population is divided on the issue of irregular migration: while the majority calls for stricter controls, in certain cases they support the legalization of undocumented foreigners, especially if they work in shortage occupations. However, there are many reasons behind the rejection, including the social costs associated with migration, given the already overburdened social welfare system. Illegal immigration is also becoming increasingly prominent in the political arena, causing serious debates.
