Maghreb country borders have been easy to cross for decades, which indicates structural problems in border security in the region. Porous border sections are effectively exploited by networks smuggling goods and people. The analysis presents the main characteristics of the smuggling of goods in Tunisia and examines recent trends in migration. It outlines the measures taken by Tunisian authorities to reduce the growing presence of sub-Saharan migrants who are perceived as a national security risk. Finally, the analysis looks at how recent changes in North African relations may have an impact on reducing migratory pressures in the region.
