Immigration policy reform was the main campaign promise of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) parties in Germany’s early federal elections on 23 February 2025. The results saw the CDU/CSU enter into a coalition with the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), and Friedrich Merz succeeded Olaf Scholz as chancellor on 6 May 2025. The black and red coalition began its term with a radical overhaul of immigration policy.
