The Iranian government is to build a new capital in the Makran region in the south-east of the country. Iran has moved its capital several times in its history, so the plan is not unprecedented. However, due to severe economic and political crises, there is much uncertainty surrounding its implementation. In any case, the ambitious undertaking provides an opportunity to explore the environmental problems facing Tehran that played a role in the decision.
