In 2024, irregular migrant border crossings on the Western Balkans route decreased at a pace faster than globally. On the Serbian-Hungarian border, a significant decrease could be observed as early as October 2023, thanks to the rigorous action taken by Serbian law enforcement agencies. However, both Hungarian border police data and Serbian sources with field knowledge report that irregular immigration is on the rise again. The analysis focuses on this phenomenon, including the exploration of European migration flows overall and alternative junctions on the Western Balkans route.
