Commenting on the changes in Tunisia, Sayfo Omar, senior researcher at the Migration Research Institute, told Mandiner: “The Tunisian president is aware that the society is religious, so like all Arab leaders, he needs legitimacy from the religious elite. As in other Arab countries, Tunisia has a ministry of religion, and loyal sheiks issue their religious guidelines and commentaries in consultation with secular leaders”.
